Fine motor skills play a crucial role in a child's development, helping with everyday tasks such as holding a spoon, buttoning a shirt, and eventually, writing. At Kinder-Garden Learning Center, we integrate activities that strengthen these skills at every stage of early childhood. Understanding how fine motor skills develop and what you can do to support them at home can give your child a strong foundation for success. The milestones outlined below align with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CTELDS).

Infants (6 weeks - 12 Months):
Fine motor development begins in infancy as infants learn to control their hands and fingers.
Key Milestone:
Grasping objects placed in their hands (palmar grasp)
Bringing their hands to mouth
Reaching for and swiping at toys
Picking up small objects using the pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger)
Activities to Try at Home:
Provide soft rattles and textured toys for grasping
Encourage tummy time to strengthen shoulder and arm muscles
Offer finger foods like puffs or small pieces of banana when developmentally appropriate
Toddlers (12 Months - 2 Years):
Toddlers refine their coordination and begin using their hands more purposefully
Key Milestones:
Stacking two or more blocks
Scribbling with crayons
Turning pages in a book
Feeding themselves with a spoon
Activities to Try at Home:
Play with large building blocks
Offer jumbo crayons for scribbling
Offer kitchen tools like a spoon and bowl for pretend cooking
Let them practice scooping and pouring with cups in the bath
Preschoolers (2-3 Years):
During the preschool years, children refine their finger strength and dexterity, preparing them for writing and self-care tasks.
Key Milestones:
Stringing large beads
Using safety scissors
Holding a crayon with a tripod grip
Zipping and unzipping clothing
Activities to Try at Home:
Encourage play with playdough to strengthen finger muscles
Offer child-safe scissors to practice cutting
Let them peel stickers and place them on paper
Engage in finger painting and tracing activities
Pre-K (3-4 Years):
At this stage, fine motor skills continue to advance, setting the foundation for school readiness.
Key Milestones:
Copying simple shapes and letters
Using utensils with improved control
Buttoning and unbuttoning clothing
Manipulating small object like puzzle pieces
Activities to Try at Home:
Provide small tweezers or tongs for picking up small objects
Encourage drawing and coloring within the lines
Let them practice lacing cards and tying knots
Offer clothespins for pinching and strengthening fingers
Kindergarten Readiness (4-5 Years):
At this stage, fine motor skills are essential for academic readiness, including handwriting and independent self-care.
Key Milestones:
Writing letters and numbers
Using utensils with control
Tying shoelaces
Buttoning and unbuttoning clothing
Activities to Try at Home:
Provide opportunities for cutting and pasting crafts
Encourage independent dressing (buttons, zippers, shoelaces)
Offer drawing and tracing activities to strengthen hand control
Incorporate activities like bead threading and using tweezers for small object sorting
How We Support Fine Motor Development at Kinder-Garden Learning Center
Our curriculum includes hands-on activities designed to strengthen fine motor skills at every stage. From sensory bins for infants to handwriting exercises for kindergarten readiness, we ensure that children build the dexterity and coordination they need to thrive. We encourage families to reinforce these skills at home by engaging in playful, hands-on activities together.
By fostering fine motor development, we help children gain independence, confidence, and the ability to tackle essential tasks. We invite you to visit our center and see how we incorporate fine motor skill-building into daily learning!
