OUR MISSION

Kinder-Garden Learning Center’s mission is to provide children with the same type and quality of experiences that they have at home and to enhance those experiences by capitalizing on the child’s remarkable receptivity to new learning.  In doing so, each child’s uniqueness is taken into consideration as he/she is nurtured, cared for, cuddled, and stimulated to reach his/her full potential – to approach each developmental milestone with enthusiasm, persistence, and joy.  Our job is to make sure that each child has numerous successful experiences every day to give him/her a positive self-concept and high self-esteem.

OUR DIRECTOR

Maria D’Angelo Neubauer, graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 1989 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.  She is a certified teacher recognized by the State of Connecticut.  She had frequently taught in the public school system and later became the coordinator of a successful nursery school facility.

She was married to Robert Neubauer in 1990 and after the birth of their first child she started a state licensed home daycare.  Her program included manipulatives, whole language, art, music and hands-on approach to learning along with an array of learning techniques to better prepare her students for the transition to the public school systems.

She now has had three children, all of whom have attended this facility and she has labored to devise a system that combines the warmth of a family home with the regimented programs of larger day cares.  Kinder-Garden Learning Center and Child Care is the result of all her hard work and dedication.  This dedication was rewarded when Kinder-Garden Learning Center became nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 1999.  Her program was also selected by the City of Meriden as a School Readiness Provider in 1998 in an effort to properly prepare the city’s youth for the public school system.

All of her employees have been hand picked for their positions and she works hard to make this center the best place around for our young children.  She has prided herself on her “open door” policy due to her understanding as a mother that not just anyone is good enough to care for your child.  In a sense, that is how she arrived at this point.  She looks forward to a long association with all of the families, long after their children have left the center.

We are pleased that you have considered Kinder-Garden Learning Center & Child Care for your childcare needs and we will work very hard to earn and maintain the trust that you have placed in us.

Thank you for your confidence in Kinder-Garden Learning Center.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Kinder-Garden Learning Center captures the essence of the home setting for children.  We also feel that a child learns best by “doing”, this is why we have built our program on the WHOLE LANGUAGE approach with HANDS-ON learning.  Our program is designed to gently stimulate each child to reach his/her full potential – to approach each developmental milestone with enthusiasm, persistence, and joy.  A child’s numerous successful experiences will give him/her a positive self-concept and high self-esteem.

Since parents have the most information and knowledge about their child(ren), they are a critical part of the teaching team.  Communication is a vital part of our relationship with parents. We strive to provide children with the same type and quality of experiences that they have at home and to enhance those experiences by capitalizing on the child’s remarkable receptivity to new learning.  In doing so, each child’s uniqueness is taken into consideration as he/she is nurtured, cared for, cuddled, and stimulated to grow and learn.

We believe our teachers need to know and understand how children grow and learn.   When teachers know developmental growth patterns, they can anticipate developmental needs and create environments and activities that encourage emerging skills without frustration or fear of failure.  To accomplish these goals, we have a very qualified staff here at Kinder-Garden Learning Center.  They are required to take at least 20 hours in childcare workshops or training classes each year.

A BIG WELCOME

Kinder-Garden Learning Center, welcomes you and your child to our facility.   We understand that this may be a very nervous time for both of you, so we would like to make this transition a very smooth and enjoyable one.  The staff would like to make sure all the necessary items are brought in to the school for your child, so he/she may be comfortable with his/her new environment.  All items that come from home must be labeled !!!

Infants/Toddlers/Preschool

2.Two extra sets of clothing (shirt, pants, undergarments, and socks) to be kept in an emergency tote.  Dirty and wet clothes will be placed in a bag and sent home with the parents that evening.  There must always be spare sets at the center.

3.   Sufficient winter clothing (hat, heavy coat, snow pants/suit, mittens, and boots) and summer clothing (light shirts, shorts and bathing suit with towel) when weather demands.

4.   A crib sized sheet and blankets for infant/toddlers

5.A cup with lid or bottle with formula

6.   Jar foods up until the child eats solids and then a packaged lunch

7.   Children’s slippers

8.   A sleeping bag or bedding in a separate cloth bag for toddler/preschoolers

Nursery School/Kindergarten

1.   Two (2) extra sets of clothing (shirt, pants, undergarments, and socks) to be kept in an emergency tote.  Dirty and wet clothes will be placed in a bag and sent home with the parents that evening.

4.   A sleeping bag or bedding in a separate cloth bag

We do expect the children to be dressed appropriately for the weather.  They should always have a sweater or sweatshirt available.   We encourage active play at our center as we employ the “Hands-on Approach” to learning and suggest that the children be dressed in their play clothes.  We hope your child’s stay with Kinder-Garden Learning Center will be safe and enjoyable.   We thank you again for putting your trust and respect in us.

Listed below are our regulations pertaining to the center’s general rules and regulations as well as health policy.  These regulations will help clarify our position to maintain a smooth Parent/Teacher (Caregiver) relationship, which will benefit you and your child(ren).  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the care of your child(ren) and his/her all around well-being, do not hesitate to bring them to our attention.  Your child’s caregiver, in turn, will also make you aware of any and all concerns regarding your child(ren) as they arise.

A deposit equal to one week’s full tuition amount is required before registration material is to be given to the family.  This deposit is non-refundable should you reconsider and decide not to attend KGLC, so please be sure of your decision before you pay this deposit.  Once your child is enrolled at our center, the full amount of this deposit will be used as payment for your child’s last week at our center, provided a two-week written notice has been provided.

We currently accept children between the ages of 6 months to 6 years of age at our center.  The parents of these children embrace our developmental approach to learning.  No child shall, on the basis of race, color, religious belief, national origin, or gender, be excluded from participation of any activity.   Since Kinder-Garden Learning Center is a small facility and it may not have immediate vacancies, a waiting list will be maintained for future enrollment.

LABELING

All items that are brought into the center must be labeled with the child(ren)’s name.  This includes, but is not limited to, any clothing, bedding, lunches, diapers, powder, ointments, toys, books, shoes, bags, etc.

OUR CURRICULUM:

The Kinder-Garden Learning Center’s curriculum is based on three important, yet basic concepts in early childhood education:

1.   Developmentally Appropriate Practice

2.   Whole Language

3.   Hands-On Approach

KGLC has developed a curriculum plan we call the “AS YOU GROW” program.  This approach offers a specialized classroom environment that stimulates your child(ren)’s development through several various learning centers centering on a monthly topic.  This curriculum offers activities in each of the learning centers so that the children develop and master math, science, language, as well as fine and large motor skills.  These experiences will prepare them for their future in the local school systems.

Our program incorporates teacher–made games to help ensure the age–appropriateness of each activity taught.   A main theme is incorporated into every month’s activities, which will be posted on calendars as well as in our monthly newsletter.  The program also provides learning experiences through projects, learning centers, and play activities.  The program includes: literature, math, science, social studies, listening, social skills, thinking, reading and writing.  Hands-on discovery is a part of the everyday at our Center and this allows the children to explore and experiment through play combined with a variety of planned activities.

Kinder-Garden Curriculum                            Infants / Toddlers / Twos

The “AS YOU GROW” program begins with our infants, toddlers, and young twos.  This unique program offers a delightful array of activities to teach babies about themselves, others, their surroundings, and the world around them.

Level 1 is a series of individual activities for infant children (birth to 18 months) and they teach acquisition and motor control.  We believe children begin learning at birth and our teachers emphasize this through interactive songs & games.

Level 2 encourages toddlers (18 months to 36 months) to build on Level 1 skills and move toward independence.   Problem solving, understanding abstract concepts, potty training, and cooperation are introduced.  The child’s language development is a key objective of this level.

Kinder-Garden Curriculum                     Preschool / Nursery School

Level 3 of the program positively reinforces those three important concepts in Early Childhood Education: (1) Developmentally Appropriate Practice, (2)  Whole Language Approach, and (3)  A Hands-On  Approach.

Our math and science programs create a learning environment which helps build a child’s vocabulary, fine motor skills, thinking skills, and trial & error.  The children will explore patterning, sequencing, similarities and differences, addition, subtraction, measurement and sorting.  We introduce Social Studies, as a way of the child and his/her family relationships with the community.  Children learn the cultural similarities and differences in others.  Our goals are to allow each child to be creative, expressive, open-minded and responsible while developing their self-esteem and sharpening their skills.

We offer a classroom environment that stimulates your child’s development through learning centers.  The curriculum offers activities in each of the learning centers so those children can excel through role-playing and choices.   The activities are in addition to the everyday activities offered, as with all activities children are encouraged to participate, but by no means are they required to take part.  Each month’s theme is accompanied by a calendar and newsletter listing activities and KGLC happenings.

Kinder-Garden Curriculum                                        Kindergarten

Level 4  is a full-day kindergarten program designed to prepare children for success in the elementary school system.  Our program focuses on developmental concepts such as sharing and hands-on discovery.  The main focus is on letter recognition through written and spoken word.  Phonics and reading skills are taught through fun and exciting lessons and projects.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Our enrichment programs can add even more to your child’s development.  We offer the children many enrichment programs that include, Bookmobile, Spanish, Music, Italian, Movement Education, Creative Art and Computers to name a few.

Kinder-Garden enjoys giving children the opportunity to learn about the community by providing exciting recreational and educational field trips.  These activities are conducted occasionally for the Preschool/Nursery school children.  In all cases, we need your signed authorization for each trip.

We believe that the outdoor playground is an extension of the classroom and in order for children to be healthy, they need fresh air and exercise.  Parents are advised to be aware of daily weather conditions so that appropriate outdoor wear is sent with the child.

MEALS & SNACKS

Kinder-Garden Learning Center does not provide breakfast and lunch meals for the children.  It is the parents’ responsibility to pack any meals they wish their child to eat each day.  The center will provide both a morning and an afternoon snack.

If you provide a breakfast for your child any day, we will serve it each weekday in our center from 7:20am to 8:00am with the exception of newborn/infants.  We would prefer that YOU feed him/her at home (bottle cereal, fruit, etc) before bring him/her into the center.  If you are unable to do this, we do expect that you feed him/her at least a bottle before arriving at the daycare (that does not mean starting to feed him/her and expecting the staff to finish the bottle upon arrival).  We ask that you attempt to feed your child at the same time each morning because having an infant on a schedule is very important.  When your child arrives at the center, we will then feed him/her provided you arrive at the center by 8:30am for children up to 1 year of age or 8:00am for children over 1 year of age.  If you arrive at the center after our breakfast time is over, but would like your child to eat at the facility, you will have to stay with your child while the food is consumed as we are unable to provide staff supervision for your child until he/she enters the scheduled group activity (usually free play or circle time).

Lunch will be served each weekday in our center between 11:30am to 12:30pm.  Rarely will an alternative meal be available, so it will be the parent’s responsibility to send in a packed lunch each day that their children will consume.  We do have a microwave oven available if this meal is something that you would like warmed up prior to serving.

Two snacks and juice or milk are served for the children each day at approximately 10:00am and 3:30 pm.  The center automatically provides these snacks each day for children over 2 years of age.  Children under two years of age must provide their own snacks as well.  A snack calendar is posted each month and every attempt will be made to follow the listed menu.  If you know your child will not like one of the listed items, please feel free to provide him/her with a substitute snack for that day.  Please avoid snacks consisting of peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oil or other nuts due to the high probability of severe allergic reactions to these products.

If your child is allergic to any food, please be sure to list it on the nutritional form provided upon enrollment.  We will make every effort to keep your child away from any such foods.

LOST PERSONAL ITEMS

KGLC and its staff assume no responsibility for ANY articles (including bedding, clothing, toys, cash, or any other items) that are brought to the center for any reason and lost or stolen during the course of the day or days they are left here.  The KGLC staff is here to care for your child(ren) and is not to be held responsible or liable for these objects regardless of your request for them to do so.  They are not allowed or obliged to spend any time looking for these items for child(ren) or parent(s) when they should be supervising their children.  This should not be expected of them at any time and especially at the end of a busy day when they have other job responsibilities to complete.

REST PERIODS

Our state established a two-hour rest period for preschoolers.  After hours of learning and fun-filled activities, your child needs to rest.  From 1:00pm – 3:00pm each day, we provide a cot or crib for them to nap.  You must supply a sleeping bag or bedding that must be cleaned each weekend and when your child is ill.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Disciplining at Kinder-Garden Learning Center is done by staff or a child’s own parent/guardian.  Any disciplining done by a parent to another child (i.e. another child other than their own will be grounds for immediate termination of child care services for the family of the parent who disciplined another child.  If you are experiencing a problem with another child at this center, you are not to take matters into your own hands, but instead, are to report the incident(s) to a teacher, the Administrator or the Director.  During the early childhood years, children are learning to be in charge of themselves.  We believe in establishing consistent, understandable limits and in having teachers who respond to inappropriate behavior with insight, sensitivity, and skill.  When clear, consistent and age–appropriate limits are present, children increasingly become responsible for themselves.  When out–of–bounds behaviors do occur, we believe it is important for children to understand why the behavior is inappropriate and how to modify groups and have a choice of activities.  This range of activities will give the child freedom to become self-directed.  If a teacher feels that a child has had inappropriate behavior he/she will be redirected, at first, to a more appropriate activity and if the behavior continues, he/she will be asked to sit in “Time Out” and discuss what is bothering him/her.  This will mean sitting alone for one minute for every year of life of the child, and will never be longer than five minutes at one time.  For example, a child of four (4) years old will only sit in “Time Out” for four minutes at a spell.

THE GOLDEN RULE

Treat others the way you would like to be treated!  The Kinder-Garden Learning Center staff has feelings too, just like you.  We ask that you, as parents, think things through before you speak with our staff to avoid a conversation that is heated, totally inappropriate and “out of line”.  Our staff will speak with you in a very professional and courteous manner but we have found over the years that the same courtesy is not always accorded to our staff.

The staff at Kinder-Garden Learning Center takes their positions seriously because we know what a huge impact we have on children’s lives.  Each staff member is required to take a predetermined number of continuing education hours in the field of early childhood education and/or related filed.  As far as the childcare field goes, government statistics show that childcare professionals are one of the lowest paid occupations in the country.  Quality childcare is not glorified babysitting.  A person in this field will not become a millionaire financially, but will become wealthy in knowing that you have touched so many children on their way to becoming a productive member of society

We are always willing to discuss any issues with any parent/guardian at any time.  However, no staff member will, nor is required to, discuss anything with any person who cannot have a conversation with us in a calm, objective manner or with someone who cannot maintain a civil demeanor.

Our teachers and aides are employed to provide quality care for your children and briefly communicate the day’s happenings with the parent/guardian.  We ask that you do not take too much of their valuable time by discussing minute or unrelated topics so that they may keep their attention on our children.  If there is a pressing matter that must be rectified in a lengthy conversation, we request that you seek out and speak to either the Director or Administrator.

REFERRING A FAMILY

We are very proud of our program at KGLC and strive to provide the best care for your child.  Our biggest compliment is when you tell a friend about Kinder-Garden Learning Center.  When family friends enroll, it’s even more fun for your child, and helps strengthen our family atmosphere.  If you refer a friend to KGLC and they remain enrolled for 3 months, you will receive a free week of childcare for (one of) your child(ren).

BABYSITTING BY KINDER-GARDEN STAFF

We strongly discourage our employees from babysitting any children who are enrolled at this center.  We urge our staff members to treat all of the children equally and that is difficult if they display favoritism (and they will) towards the children they baby sit.  If you and our employee make a babysitting agreement, that has nothing to do with this daycare and we accept NO RESPONSIBILITY OF LIABILITY for what that individual does outside of the Kinder-Garden Learning Center facility.  Please do not use our employees as babysitters.

COMMITMENT TO THE CHILD

Kinder-Garden Learning Center is more that just a daycare.  It is OUR FAMILY!  We pride ourselves on our commitment to the children of our community.  OUR CHILDREN are our primary concern and we will use whatever means necessary to protect and nurture them while they are in our care.  As mandated reporters, we are legally obligated to report any signs of abuse or negligence and we do not take this responsibility lightly.  We routinely have children in our care for over 40 hours per week and we get to know them very well – their moods, their patterns, their personalities, their uniqueness and the way they act at Kinder-Garden Learning Center.  Sometimes children are very different at home than they are at daycare and this is nothing surprising since there are different rules here than there are at home.  We believe that children should have a routine, structure and clearly defined boundaries.  By using the “Hands On” approach we allow children to explore their environment within a supervised setting.

CHILD(REN)’S NEEDS

Is this the most appropriate day care setting as far as meeting your child’s needs?  If a child is experiencing unacceptable behaviors on a consistent basis, and the methods that we are using are not working, the Director will discuss what options we might use to try to change or correct these behaviors.  All parties must be open and honest in communicating the concerns they are having in dealing with this child.  The key is for the staff and parents to stay in constant communication.  At first the Director may hold an informal meeting with the parents and staff involved with the child to discuss their concerns about the child and these concerns may range from behavior, development, speech, or a physical condition, etc.  If the child’s behavior continues to escalate and we have exhausted our resources to rectify the situation, the Director will re-evaluate the situation with our social worker.  The Director will consider everything that has transpired and render a decision that is in the best interest of everyone involved: the child with the concern, the rest of the children in his/her area, the staff, and the parents or legal guardians.  The final decision will be based upon what Kinder-Garden Learning Center can provide to meet the child’s needs and what it cannot provide.  Parents/Legal Guardians may not agree with the decision, but the Director’s decision is based on what has already been done to help alleviate the situation involving this particular child.  Often times a smaller group setting or a “one to one” setting would be more conductive to the child’s individual needs.  THIS IS ONE THING THAT WE CANNOT PROVIDE AND THIS CENTER.

HOLIDAYS AND VACATIONS

Kinder-Garden Learning Center will be closed for the following paid holidays.  Tuition is expected for these weekdays each year:

When a holiday falls on a Tuesday, then the preceding day (Monday) will also be observed.  When a holiday falls on a Thursday, then the proceeding day (Friday) will also be observed.   When the holiday falls on a weekend, we will select either the preceding Friday or the proceeding Monday as our holiday.

+++  KINDER-GARDEN LEARNING CENTER WILL BE CLOSED FOR ONE WEEK DURING EACH SUMMER.  YOU WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO PAY TUITION, SINCE YOU MAY BE FORCED TO FIND ALTERNATIVE CARE FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK.  FAMILIES WILL BE GIVEN AT LEAST A 6 WEEK NOTICE TO ALLOW ADEQUATE TIME TO FIND AN ALTERNATIVE CHILD CARE SOURCE.

SMOKING AT CENTER

Parents are reminded that smoking is not permitted in the center or on the grounds.  For the safety of our children, please do not toss cigarette or cigar butts on the grounds or in the parking lot.  We thank you for your cooperation.

HEALTH POLICY

Our Nurse Consultant visits the center weekly to ensure the health and safety of the children.

A physical is required of every child before he/she can begin attending the daycare center (sec. 19a-79-5a (2)(B)(C) of the Statutes and Regulations for licensing Child Day Care Centers and Group Day Care Homes).  A physical must be done annually and immunizations up to date in order to remain enrolled at a state-licensed daycare center.  Forms are available at the center, but it is your responsibility to review your child’s form and plan physician’s visits accordingly.  Your child will be excluded from facility childcare if, in the last twenty-four (24) hours, he/she has had:

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Draining Eyes

Fine Blisters

Blotchy Rash

Lice or Nits

Rash

Fever in Excess of 100

Colored Nasal Secretions

Any communicable disease

Your child must be isolated from the other children and will be evaluated by us to see what be causing the problem.  You will be notified and advised accordingly and may expect to pick your child(ren), up IMMEDIATELY.  An ill child in our center is not fair to the other children, their parents, or this facility.  If there are any questions as to your child’s symptoms, do not hesitate to contact us.  You will be notified if your child has been exposed to any communicable diseases (i.e. Chickenpox, Strep Throat, Fifth’s Disease, Scarlet Fever, Coxsackie Virus, Meningitis, Roseola, Conjunctivitis, RSV, etc).  All sore throats should be cultured at the parent’s expense and the child should not return until the result has been read NEGATIVE.  Parents will let the center know if they gave their child any medication before coming to day care, the reasons for giving the medication and anything that has recently happened to your child at home or elsewhere that might affect his/her behavior at Kinder-Garden Learning Center

The child(ren) must be free of the above symptoms for 24 hours without the use of medications and must stay home from day care the next day.  A doctor’s note stating that the child can return will not admit your child back into the center unless the “free of symptoms for 24 hours” is true, he/she has stayed home for a day, and he/she must be free of symptoms without the use of acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough medication, cold medication, or any other medications that might be masking a more serious condition.  Sometimes the best medicine for a child’s ailment is simply keeping him/her home and letting your child rest, get plenty of fluids, and a specialized diet that he/she cannot get at daycare.

A LITTLE ONE ON ONE AND PLENTY OF PARENTAL TLC CARE GOES A LONG WAY!

MEDICATION

WE DO NOT ADMINISTER MEDICATION AT THIS FACILITY.  We ask that you remind your pediatrician or family physician that your child is in a center based childcare and see if they will offer medication that can be administered twice a day, before you bring your child to the center and again in the evening, thus avoiding administering medication at the center completely.  However, if your child is a diabetic, asthmatic, epileptic, has a severe allergic reaction to food or insect bites, or something along ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards, we will administer the medication with a signed authorization to do so and a specific physician’s note describing the condition

TUITION

Tuition is due on Monday, WEEKLY IN ADVANCE OF CARE.  Please do not place Kinder-Garden Learning Center in the position of having to remind you of your obligation.  This fee not only pays for your child(ren)’s tuition but also reserves the child(ren)’s position.  As a result, no refund or restitution will be given in the event that your child is absent for any reason (i.e. illness, holidays, snow days, vacation, etc.) as this business is operating on a fixed weekly income and is dependent on prompt payment of fees.  Failure to remit tuition when it is due jeopardizes the continuity and stability of your child(ren)’s care.   For this reason, we cannot extend credit to any family enrolled at Kinder-Garden Learning Center.

Payments submitted “post dated” or asked to be held from immediate deposit must include the $5.00 per day late fee and this practice may be allowed occasionally, but is discouraged by Kinder-Garden Learning Center.  It is the parent/legal guardian’s responsibility to place payment into either of the tuition boxes each week.  Please do not leave checks in lunch bags, knapsacks or tote bags.  It is not the teacher or aide’s responsibility to discuss or handle your tuition payments.  If you need assistance or explanation regarding tuition payments, please speak with the Director or the Administrator.

Any overtime charge is due by the following morning.  Any personal/business checks that are returned by your bank as unpaid will result in the maker being responsible for any and all fees incurred PLUS a $25.00 RETURNED CHECK FEE.  A late fee will be assessed if payment is not received by center closing on Monday evening, this late fee will be $5.00 per day until full payment is received.  If your account has numerous late payment fees assessed, you may be asked to withdraw your child from the center.  Parents must notify the Director of the child’s absence from the center.  Tuition is due regardless of attendance and Kinder-Garden Learning Center reserves the right to periodically review and modify our fees and policies.
